Circulating Hormones

Meaning

Endocrine signaling molecules, synthesized and secreted by ductless glands, that travel through the bloodstream to exert their effects on distant target cells possessing specific receptors. These hormones include peptides, amines, and steroids, and they function as chemical messengers to regulate virtually all physiological processes, from metabolism and growth to mood and reproduction. Their concentration in the peripheral blood is a key metric used in clinical endocrinology to assess glandular function and systemic hormonal status.
