Circadian System

Meaning

The circadian system represents the endogenous, genetically encoded biological timekeeping mechanism, centrally orchestrated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus, which regulates approximately 24-hour cycles in nearly all physiological and behavioral processes. This master clock is a fundamental and pervasive regulator of endocrine rhythmicity, controlling the precise timing and amplitude of hormone secretion, including the nocturnal surge of melatonin and the distinct morning peak of cortisol. Maintaining the integrity of this system is essential for metabolic and hormonal health.
