Circadian Rhythm Misalignment

Meaning

Circadian Rhythm Misalignment denotes a state where an individual’s internal biological clock, specifically the master pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), is desynchronized from the external 24-hour light-dark cycle or from the individual’s actual behavioral schedule. This clinical phenomenon leads to a mismatch between the timing of endogenous hormonal secretions, metabolic processes, and sleep-wake cycles, resulting in physiological stress and functional impairment. It is a key contributor to metabolic and endocrine dysfunction in shift workers and those with chronic sleep debt.
