Circadian Rhythm Gut Axis

Meaning

This term describes the intricate, bidirectional communication network linking the body’s internal 24-hour clock, or circadian rhythm, with the composition and function of the gut microbiome. The host’s central pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and peripheral clocks in the gut regulate intestinal permeability, motility, and nutrient absorption. Simultaneously, the rhythmic metabolic activity of the gut microbiota influences host clock gene expression and hormone secretion. Disruption of this axis contributes significantly to metabolic dysregulation and hormonal imbalance.
