Circadian Phase Shifting

Meaning

The deliberate adjustment of the timing of an organism’s internal biological clock, or circadian rhythm, relative to the external 24-hour cycle, often employed to mitigate the effects of jet lag, shift work, or to correct a pathologically delayed or advanced sleep-wake phase disorder. This clinical technique involves strategically timed exposure to powerful environmental cues, known as zeitgebers, such as light, melatonin, and food intake. The goal is to synchronize the central suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and peripheral clocks with the desired schedule.
