Circadian Dysfunction

Meaning

Circadian dysfunction refers to a disruption in the body’s internal biological clock, the circadian rhythm, which orchestrates numerous physiological processes over approximately a 24-hour cycle. This disruption can involve a misalignment with external light-dark cues or an intrinsic abnormality in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the brain’s master clock. It impairs the body’s ability to maintain optimal timing for functions like sleep-wake cycles, hormone secretion, and metabolic regulation.
