Circadian Dysfunction

Meaning

Circadian Dysfunction describes a disruption or misalignment of the body’s internal 24-hour biological clock, which normally regulates numerous physiological and behavioral rhythms, including the sleep-wake cycle and hormone secretion patterns. This misalignment occurs when the internal timing system, governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus, is out of sync with external environmental cues, such as light-dark cycles or feeding times. Clinical consequences range from sleep disorders to profound metabolic and endocrine derangements.
