Circadian Desynchrony

Meaning

Circadian desynchrony describes a state where the body’s internal biological clock, governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), falls out of alignment with external environmental cues, such as the light-dark cycle or social schedules. This misalignment disrupts the finely tuned 24-hour rhythms that regulate nearly all physiological processes, including hormone secretion, metabolism, and sleep-wake cycles. It represents a fundamental breakdown in temporal homeostasis, impacting overall health and contributing to various chronic conditions. Clinically, this is often seen in shift workers or individuals with severe jet lag, where the internal hormonal milieu is constantly confused.
