Chylomicrons

Meaning

Chylomicrons are large lipoprotein particles synthesized within the enterocytes of the small intestine following the absorption of dietary fats. They serve as the primary transport vehicle for exogenous triglycerides and cholesterol from the gastrointestinal tract into the lymphatic system and subsequently the systemic circulation. Their presence in the plasma is responsible for the temporary postprandial turbidity of the blood. These particles are essential for distributing energy-dense lipids to peripheral tissues for storage or utilization.
