Chronotype Plasticity

Meaning

Chronotype plasticity describes the inherent biological capacity of an individual’s preferred timing for sleep and activity to be shifted or adapted in response to specific environmental and behavioral cues, known as zeitgebers. This malleability allows for the modulation of the intrinsic circadian rhythm, moving an individual away from their genetically determined “lark” or “owl” chronotype. Clinically, leveraging this plasticity is essential for addressing the metabolic and psychological health detriments associated with chronic social jet lag or shift work. Successful adaptation requires consistent input to the central biological clock.
