Chronic Stress Metabolism

Meaning

Chronic Stress Metabolism refers to the persistent, maladaptive shifts in energy utilization and hormonal signaling that occur when the body is subjected to prolonged psychological or physiological stressors. This sustained activation of the stress response system, primarily the HPA axis, drives continuous overproduction of glucocorticoids and catecholamines. These chronic changes often lead to profound metabolic dysregulation, including persistent hyperglycemia, systemic insulin resistance, and the preferential deposition of visceral fat. This is a pathological state that significantly increases the risk for metabolic syndrome.
