Chronic Stress Adaptation

Meaning

Chronic Stress Adaptation refers to the long-term, systemic physiological adjustments the body makes in response to prolonged exposure to stressors, which can be physical, emotional, or metabolic. This process is primarily mediated by the sustained activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to altered patterns of cortisol and DHEA secretion. While initially protective, this adaptation can eventually lead to allostatic load, characterized by hormonal dysregulation, immune system shifts, and metabolic disturbances. Clinically, recognizing the stage of adaptation is vital for designing effective recovery protocols.
