Chronic Neuroinflammation

Meaning

Chronic Neuroinflammation denotes a persistent, low-grade inflammatory state within the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by the prolonged activation of glial cells, primarily microglia and astrocytes. Unlike acute inflammation, which is protective, this chronic activation releases pro-inflammatory cytokines that contribute to neuronal dysfunction and damage. This condition is often subclinical but is implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases, mood disorders, and cognitive decline. It significantly impairs the neuro-endocrine communication necessary for systemic balance.
