Chronic Kidney Disease

Meaning

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive, long-term condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over months or years. The kidneys’ primary roles in filtering waste products and regulating fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance become impaired. CKD is clinically staged based on the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which measures how effectively the kidneys are filtering the blood. This condition significantly impacts hormonal health, as the kidneys are involved in vitamin D activation and erythropoietin production.
