Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia

Meaning

Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia (CIH) is a physiological stress state defined by repeated, cyclical episodes of reduced oxygen availability (hypoxia) followed by periods of reoxygenation, persisting over an extended period. Clinically, this pattern is most prominently associated with obstructive sleep apnea, where it contributes significantly to systemic inflammation and cardiovascular morbidity. The recurring fluctuation in oxygen tension places a substantial burden on cellular homeostasis and metabolic regulation, particularly within the neuro-endocrine axes.
