Chronic Insulin Resistance

Meaning

Chronic insulin resistance is a persistent pathological state where target cells throughout the body, including those in muscle, fat, and liver tissue, exhibit a diminished response to the hormone insulin. This systemic cellular insensitivity necessitates the pancreas to secrete increasingly higher levels of insulin to maintain euglycemia, eventually leading to hyperinsulinemia. Over time, this condition disrupts metabolic homeostasis and significantly increases the risk for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and cardiovascular complications.
