Chronic Activation States

Meaning

A prolonged, maladaptive physiological condition where multiple systems, most notably the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system, remain chronically in a heightened state of alert or sustained response. This pervasive, sustained activation contrasts sharply with the body’s naturally transient and adaptive reaction to acute, short-term stressors. It signifies a state of allostatic overload.
