Chromatography

Meaning

Chromatography is a collective term for a sophisticated laboratory technique used to separate a complex mixture into its individual chemical components for subsequent qualitative and quantitative analysis. This essential analytical tool allows clinicians to isolate and measure specific, often low-concentration, endocrine biomarkers and their metabolites from biological fluids such as serum or urine. In the clinical setting, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography (GC) is frequently coupled with mass spectrometry to provide definitive structural identification and precise concentration data for hormonal profiling. It is a gold standard for accurate measurement of steroid hormone panels.
