Chondrocytes

Meaning

Chondrocytes are the sole cell type found within healthy cartilage, a specialized connective tissue crucial for joint function, structural support, and shock absorption. These metabolically active cells are responsible for the synthesis and maintenance of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of cartilage, which is primarily composed of collagen, predominantly type II, and proteoglycans like aggrecan. Their proper function is essential for the structural integrity and resilience of articular surfaces.
