Cholestatic injury refers to cellular damage within the liver, primarily affecting hepatocytes and cholangiocytes, that arises directly from or is exacerbated by the impaired flow of bile from the liver into the intestine. This condition signifies a disruption in the normal bile secretion and transport pathways, leading to the retention of bile components within the liver parenchyma.
