Cerebral Cortex

Meaning

The highly convoluted, outermost layer of the cerebrum in the brain, responsible for the most complex cognitive functions, including consciousness, language, memory, and executive control. This thin sheet of neural tissue is divided into four major lobes—frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital—each contributing to distinct aspects of sensory processing and motor command. The integrity and function of the cerebral cortex are profoundly influenced by the endocrine environment, as sex steroids and thyroid hormones modulate neuronal development and synaptic plasticity.
