Cerebral Blood Flow

Meaning

The precise volume of blood supplied to the brain tissue over a defined period, typically expressed as milliliters per 100 grams of brain tissue per minute. Maintaining adequate cerebral blood flow (CBF) is paramount, as the brain has exceptionally high and constant metabolic demands and relies exclusively on the continuous delivery of oxygen and glucose. Robust autoregulation mechanisms ensure that CBF remains remarkably stable despite fluctuations in systemic blood pressure, protecting delicate neuronal function from ischemia or hyperperfusion.
