Central Sleep Apnea

Meaning

Central Sleep Apnea is a sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by recurrent cessations or significant reductions in airflow during sleep, due to the brain’s temporary lack of respiratory effort. Unlike obstructive sleep apnea, where physical blockage occurs, CSA involves the central nervous system failing to signal respiratory muscles. This results in periods where an individual stops attempting to breathe, causing drops in blood oxygen and fragmented sleep.
