Central Sleep Apnea

Meaning

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is a clinical disorder characterized by recurrent cessations or significant reductions in breathing effort during sleep due to a temporary failure of the brain’s respiratory control centers. Unlike the more common obstructive sleep apnea, the airway remains open; the problem lies in the central nervous system’s inability to send the proper signal to the muscles of respiration. This condition leads to intermittent drops in blood oxygen saturation and fragmented sleep, impacting overall health and hormonal regulation.
