Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

Meaning

Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) is a serious ophthalmological condition characterized by the partial or complete blockage of the central vein responsible for draining blood from the retina. This occlusion leads to a backup of blood, causing hemorrhage, retinal ischemia, and subsequent macular edema, which manifests as sudden, painless vision loss. It is a form of ocular stroke, frequently signaling an underlying systemic vascular or hypercoagulable disorder.
