Cellular Voltage

Meaning

The electrical potential difference maintained across the plasma membrane of a cell, a fundamental characteristic of all living cells, typically measured in millivolts. This resting membrane potential is not static but a dynamic, regulatory signal that governs cell function, proliferation, migration, and communication. A healthy cellular voltage is integral for optimal metabolic function, nutrient transport, and hormonal responsiveness. Deviations can signal cellular stress or dysfunction.
