Cellular Proliferation

Meaning

Cellular proliferation is the fundamental biological process characterized by a tightly controlled increase in the number of cells, which occurs as a result of cell growth and division, primarily through mitosis. This process is essential for all physiological functions, including tissue growth, wound healing, and the normal maintenance of organs throughout the lifespan. Within the endocrine system, hormone signaling pathways act as critical modulators, either promoting or inhibiting this activity in various target tissues. Dysregulation of proliferation is a pathological hallmark, particularly in the initiation and progression of neoplasia.
