Cellular Insulin Signaling

Meaning

The intricate biochemical cascade initiated when the hormone insulin binds to its specific transmembrane receptor on the surface of target cells, primarily adipocytes, myocytes, and hepatocytes. This signaling pathway is metabolically essential for regulating the uptake, utilization, and storage of glucose and other nutrients throughout the body. Dysfunction in this process, known as insulin resistance, is a central pathological feature of type 2 diabetes and numerous cardiometabolic syndromes.
