Cellular Immortality

Meaning

Cellular immortality describes the biological capacity of a cell line to undergo indefinite replication without entering replicative senescence or undergoing programmed cell death under normal physiological conditions. While this is the natural state of germline cells, its manifestation in somatic cells is a hallmark of neoplastic transformation or specific laboratory models. Understanding this evasion of natural limits is central to aging research and oncology.
