Cellular Excitability

Meaning

Cellular excitability refers to the essential, fundamental property of specific cell types, most notably neurons and muscle cells, to generate a rapid electrical signal, known as an action potential, in direct response to an incoming stimulus. This swift, transient change in the cell’s membrane potential is absolutely critical for all communication and coordinated function across the nervous and muscular systems. Maintaining a proper hormonal balance is known to profoundly influence this critical cellular responsiveness.
