Mechanism
The core mechanism begins with the formation of a double-membraned vesicle, known as the phagophore, which expands to sequester the targeted cytoplasmic material, forming a sealed autophagosome. This autophagosome then fuses with the lysosome, creating an autolysosome where potent hydrolytic enzymes execute the breakdown of the contents into fundamental constituents like amino acids and fatty acids. These reclaimed building blocks are subsequently released back into the cytosol for biosynthesis and energy generation.
