Cellular Atrophy

Meaning

Cellular Atrophy in endocrinology denotes the pathological reduction in the size and functional capacity of individual cells within an endocrine-responsive tissue, often leading to a diminished overall organ mass and hormonal output. This reduction is not due to cell death but rather a decrease in structural proteins and organelles, representing a metabolic adaptation to reduced workload or chronic hormonal deprivation. It is a key feature in conditions like post-menopausal ovarian regression or testicular decline in secondary hypogonadism.
