Cell Signaling Cascades

Meaning

The intricate, sequential series of biochemical events within a cell initiated by the binding of an extracellular signaling molecule, such as a hormone or growth factor, to a specific cell surface or intracellular receptor. These cascades amplify the initial signal, ultimately leading to a defined cellular response, such as gene expression, proliferation, or apoptosis. They represent the fundamental communication network governing all physiological processes.
