Catecholamine Spikes

Meaning

A sudden, acute, and often transient surge in the circulating levels of catecholamines, which include epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and dopamine, released from the adrenal medulla and sympathetic nervous system. These spikes represent an exaggerated or inappropriate activation of the body’s acute stress response. Clinically, frequent catecholamine spikes can contribute to sympathetic overdrive, impacting cardiovascular health and disrupting the delicate balance of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
