Catecholamine Axis

Meaning

The Catecholamine Axis refers to the integrated neuroendocrine system responsible for the synthesis, regulation, and physiological effects of the catecholamine neurotransmitters and hormones, which include dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. This axis is the rapid-response component of the body’s stress system, central to the sympathetic nervous system and the immediate “fight-or-flight” response. Its proper function is essential for acute stress adaptation, vigilance, mood regulation, and cardiovascular homeostasis. Dysregulation of this axis is clinically associated with chronic stress, anxiety disorders, and adrenal fatigue patterns.
