Catabolic Processes

Meaning

Catabolic Processes encompass the set of metabolic pathways that break down complex molecules into simpler substances, releasing energy in the process. This destructive phase of metabolism is essential for generating the energy required for cellular functions and for recycling molecular components. Key examples include the breakdown of glucose for ATP production and the degradation of proteins into amino acids for gluconeogenesis or repair. While necessary for survival, an excessive or prolonged catabolic state, often driven by hormones like cortisol, can lead to muscle wasting and a net loss of lean body mass.
