Carry-Over Effect

Meaning

In clinical trial methodology, the carry-over effect refers to the residual influence of a treatment administered during one phase of a study that persists into a subsequent treatment phase. This residual activity can confound the results of the later treatment, making it difficult to isolate the true effect of the new intervention. It is a critical consideration in crossover study designs, particularly when evaluating interventions with long half-lives or sustained physiological impacts.
