Carotid Intima-Media Thickness

Meaning

Carotid Intima-Media Thickness, or CIMT, is a non-invasive, ultrasound-derived measurement quantifying the thickness of the innermost two layers of the carotid artery wall. This metric is a fundamental tool in cardiovascular risk stratification, providing a tangible, quantifiable measure of subclinical atherosclerosis. It is employed in clinical practice to assess the cumulative vascular damage that often precedes overt cardiovascular events like stroke or myocardial infarction. An increased CIMT value is considered an independent predictor of future cardiovascular morbidity.
