Carotid Bodies

Meaning

Carotid bodies are specialized peripheral chemoreceptors, small clusters of cells located bilaterally at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery in the neck. Their primary physiological role involves sensing and responding to changes in the partial pressures of oxygen (PaO2) and carbon dioxide (PaCO2), as well as pH levels in arterial blood. These vital structures function as critical sentinels for respiratory and cardiovascular regulation, providing immediate feedback to the central nervous system to maintain blood gas homeostasis.
