Cardiovascular Toxicity

Meaning

Cardiovascular Toxicity, or cardiotoxicity, denotes a state of damage or functional impairment inflicted upon the heart muscle, valves, or the peripheral vascular system due to exposure to an exogenous substance, typically a pharmaceutical agent or environmental toxin. This adverse outcome can clinically manifest as heart failure, dangerous arrhythmias, hypertension, or accelerated atherosclerosis, significantly compromising circulatory health. Careful assessment for cardiotoxicity is a non-negotiable component of pharmacovigilance, especially when utilizing high-potency treatments such as certain chemotherapies or hormonal therapies.
