Cardiomyocyte

Meaning

A cardiomyocyte is the specialized, striated muscle cell that forms the bulk of the myocardium, the muscular tissue of the heart. These cells are fundamentally responsible for generating the coordinated, rhythmic contractions that drive the pumping action of the heart. The health and functional integrity of cardiomyocytes are profoundly influenced by various circulating hormones, including thyroid hormones and catecholamines, which modulate heart rate and contractility. Preserving cardiomyocyte viability and function is paramount in preventing and treating cardiovascular disease.
