Cardiac Troponin

Meaning

Cardiac Troponin refers to a complex of regulatory proteins—Troponin I, Troponin T, and Troponin C—that are uniquely expressed in the myocardial tissue of the heart. These proteins are fundamental components of the contractile apparatus in heart muscle cells, governing the crucial interaction between actin and myosin filaments. In a clinical setting, elevated levels of cardiac troponins (cTnI and cTnT) in the bloodstream serve as highly specific and sensitive biomarkers for myocardial injury or necrosis. Measurement of these proteins is considered the gold standard for diagnosing acute coronary syndromes, providing essential information for patient triage and management.
