Cardiac Stem Cells

Meaning

Cardiac Stem Cells are resident progenitor cells within the adult heart, capable of self-renewal and differentiation into essential cardiac cell types including cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells. These cells remain quiescent, activating in response to injury to contribute to intrinsic repair. Their discovery challenged prior beliefs about the adult heart’s regenerative capacity.
