Cardiac Stem Cells

Meaning

Cardiac Stem Cells (CSCs) are a population of progenitor cells naturally residing within the myocardium, the muscular tissue of the heart. These cells possess the capacity for self-renewal and the potential to differentiate into the major cell types of the heart, including cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells. Their clinical significance lies in their potential role in cardiac tissue repair, regeneration following injury like myocardial infarction, and maintenance of cardiac function throughout life. The study of CSCs is a core area of regenerative medicine and cardiology.
