Cardiac Myocyte

Meaning

A Cardiac Myocyte, also known as a cardiomyocyte, is the specialized muscle cell that constitutes the bulk of the heart muscle, the myocardium. These cells are the fundamental contractile units responsible for generating the mechanical force that drives the heart’s rhythmic pumping action, propelling blood through the circulatory system. Their unique cellular architecture and electrophysiological properties are essential for the synchronized, lifelong contractions required for sustaining life and maintaining systemic perfusion. Cardiac function is highly sensitive to endocrine signals and metabolic shifts.
