Cardiac Hypertrophy

Meaning

Cardiac hypertrophy refers to the enlargement and thickening of the heart muscle, specifically the ventricular walls, resulting from an increase in the size of individual cardiomyocytes rather than an increase in their number. This adaptation can be physiological, occurring in response to sustained athletic training, or pathological, typically a maladaptive response to chronic stress like hypertension or valvular disease, leading to altered cardiac function.
