Cardiac Fibroblasts

Meaning

Cardiac fibroblasts are the most abundant non-myocyte cell type within the heart, residing in the interstitial spaces between cardiomyocytes. These spindle-shaped cells are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of the myocardial extracellular matrix, producing and degrading its components like collagen and elastin. They contribute significantly to the mechanical properties and electrical conduction of cardiac tissue.
