Cancer Stem Cells

Meaning

Cancer Stem Cells, or CSCs, are a subpopulation of malignant cells within a tumor that possess self-renewal capacity and the ability to differentiate into the heterogeneous cell types comprising the bulk of the cancer. These specialized cells are believed to be responsible for tumor initiation, metastatic spread, and resistance to conventional chemotherapy and radiation. Targeting CSCs is a critical focus in molecular oncology for achieving durable remission and preventing recurrence.
