Calcium Homeostasis

Meaning

Calcium homeostasis refers to the physiological processes that maintain a stable concentration of calcium ions in the extracellular fluid, in the blood. This tightly regulated balance is crucial for nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, blood coagulation, and bone health. The body continuously adjusts calcium levels to prevent both hypocalcemia and hypercalcemia, which can have severe health consequences.
