Calcium Handling

Meaning

Calcium Handling is the complex physiological process encompassing the absorption, distribution, storage, and excretion of calcium ions (Ca2+) across various tissues, particularly in muscle cells, bone, and the nervous system. This delicate process is tightly regulated by an interplay of hormones, including parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin, and the active form of Vitamin D, calcitriol. Proper calcium handling is essential not only for skeletal integrity but also for crucial cellular functions like muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and hormonal secretion. Dysregulation in this system can lead to significant clinical consequences, including osteoporosis and cardiac arrhythmias.
