CAG Repeats

Meaning

CAG Repeats refer to a variable length sequence of cytosine-adenine-guanine trinucleotides located within the exon 1 region of the Androgen Receptor (AR) gene. This polymorphic sequence encodes a polyglutamine tract in the receptor protein that directly modulates its functional transcriptional activity. The length of this repeat segment is a critical genetic factor influencing an individual’s physiological sensitivity to androgens like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. Variations in this sequence can lead to significant differences in hormonal response, even among individuals with identical circulating hormone levels.
