CAG Repeat Sequence

Meaning

A CAG repeat sequence refers to a trinucleotide DNA segment consisting of cytosine, adenine, and guanine, tandemly repeated multiple times within the coding region of certain genes. This specific sequence codes for the amino acid glutamine, and its repetitive nature leads to a polyglutamine tract within the resulting protein. The stability of these repeats is critical, as an expansion beyond a normal threshold is a direct genetic cause for a group of inherited neurodegenerative disorders, often termed polyglutamine diseases.
